Sumps
made to any size! |
|
Sump
tanks are designed and have evolved
over the years for 2 main reasons.
1. To increase the systems
water volume which aids stability.
2.To house all the essential equipment
needed in today's modern reef systems.
Why
have a sump?As
there are several pumps, protein skimmers,
various reactors, heaters to use on
todays reef tanks it can be difficult
to place all this equipment in a singe
show tank and keep it hidden and serviceable.
So a second tank has evolved in the
last several years to make life easier.
This usually sits under your main
tank in the cabinet and is called
a sump tank, it can also be sited
in another room if needed if space
allows for this.
In the sump you can house all the
equipment out of sight helping to
create more space in the main tank
which makes maintenance for your reef
system much easier.
Sump
tanks come in several designs depending
on the type of system you require.
The main display tank has to have
a weir box installed with holes drilled
into the base fitted with pipe work.
This takes the water down to the sump
which is then returned via a pump.

Pre-filter with exit pipe work |
A
sump consists of a plain glass tank
only
or is commonly fitted with the following
added:
pre-filter for catching the
waste
Dividers to direct water
Deep sand bed section
Refugiam section
Return pump section
Sumps
can be made in 6mm glass however as
they are a high maintenance area we
like to build ours in 10 mm glass
for strength.
The
sump also has to be a minimum size
to allow the extra water to go when
you switch off your return pump. Failure
to allow for this will lead to a flood.
All our sumps are designed
with this in mind. |
How
do sumps work?
First section:
This is the pre-filter box
on our sumps, this is highly recommended
for catching all the waste which travels
down the overflow pipes from the main
display tank and is washable/re-usable.
Second section:
This
is where you would site your protein
skimmer and maybe a phosphate/carbon
remover or calcium reactor.
Third Section:
This
is for either a deep sand bed or live
rock rubble or our own calcium media
section for buffering the water and
calcium addition.
Fourth Section:
This
is the return pump section also fitted
with our re-gassing tower to replenish
the water with oxygen and aid extra
biological filtration. |
